Pioneers Can't Solve Husky Goaltending, Fall 2-1
Feb. 2, 2007
Milford, CT - Freshman Beau Erickson made 31 saves to backstop the University of Connecticut to a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The win was the Huskies seventh in their last nine games against Sacred Heart, and third in their last five trips to Milford.
The Huskies scored two first period goals to build an early lead. Senior Matt Scherer got UConn started 5:14 into the game. Scherer took a drop pass from sophomore Sean Erickson and ripped a one-time shot that beat Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) on the stick-side.
Sophomore Chris Myhro put the Huskies up 2-0 at the 9:35 mark of the first. After Smith made a save on a shot by Charles Solberg, Myhro followed the play and cleaned up the rebound for his team leading 16th goal of the season.
Sophomore Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) finally got the Pioneers on the board with 3:31 left in regulation. Grimson took a pass from freshman Matt Gordon (Lynnfield, MA) and ripped a shot from the blue line that found the back of the net for his third goal of the year.
Sacred Heart had plenty of chances to score more goals, out shooting the Huskies 32-26, but Erickson was a wall in net, stopping all of the Pioneers opportunities. SHU also hurt itself by taking eight penalties.
The Pioneers and Huskies close out their weekend series tomorrow night in Storrs. Face-off at the Freitas Ice Forum is set for 7:00 pm.
