Pioneers Settle For 3-3 Tie With Canisius

Buffalo, NY - Junior Carl Hudson scored two goals and Canisius found the back of the net twice in the final two minutes to earn a 3-3 tie with Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at Buffalo State Sports Arena. Senior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) had a goal and an assist for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers came out of the gate quickly as senior Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) put SHU on the board five minutes into the game. Giosa carried the puck into the offensive zone and dished a pass through the slot to Grimson who ripped a shot into a wide open left side for his third goal.

Hudson got the Griffs even after on period by scoring with 32 seconds left in the first. With Canisius on the power-play, the defenseman let a trademark slapshot go from the point, beating SHU goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) to even the game.

Sacred Heart dominated the second period, scoring two goals. Freshman Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) gave the Pioneers the lead at the 3:59 mark, batting the puck out of mid-air into the goal. Giosa made it 3-1 Sacred Heart at the 5:05 mar. In the offensive zone, senior Bear Trapp (Regina, SK), dropped the puck back to Giosa who made a move around his defender and slid the puck behind Canisius goaltender Dan Morrison for his team leading ninth goal. Trapp had three assists in the game, bringing his career total to 90, one short of the school record.

Canisius began their comeback after Gingera was called for hooking with 2:51 remaining. The Griffs pulled Morrison for a two skater advantage. One minute later, Jason Weeks beat Drew on a shot from the side to make it a one goal game. With 40 seconds left, Hudson picked up a loose puck after a turnover in the SHU zone and blasted a slaphot the went off Drew and into the goal to tie the game.

Both goalies held strong in overtime to preserve the draw. Drew made 27 saves while Morrision finished the game with 21 saves for Canisius. The Griffs held a 30-24 shots advantage.

Sacred Heart and Canisius close out their weekend series Saturday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
