ST. CLOUD, MN (January 28) - The Saint Cloud State Huskies (10-15-2, 5-13-0 WCHA) used five first period goals to bury the Sacred Heart Pioneers (8-13-1, 8-4-1 AHA) in non-conference action at the National Hockey Center on Friday night.
The Huskies' Justin Fletcher got things started early, scoring the first of three special teams Husky goals just 6:18 into the frame on the power play. St. Cloud would add on four more tallies before the period was out for a 5-0 lead after one.
Saint Cloud would add a short-handed goal in the second, before adding three third period goals. The lone Sacred Heart goal came late in the third as Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) chipped in a rebound for the only bright spot of the night for SHU.
The nine goals given up by Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) marks the most since SHU gave up 10 goals on December 1, 1998 in a 10-2 Pioneer loss to Canisius.
Smith would end the night with 40 saves in taking the loss while Tim Boron stopped 20 picking up the win for St. Cloud.
The Pioneers and the Huskies face off again Saturday night in the second game of the weekend set with the face off scheduled for 8:07 PM (EST).
