Jan. 21, 2006

Final Stats

Milford, CT - Freshman Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) scored two goals and added one assist and junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) added two assists as the Pioneers beat Bentley 4-2 in men's ice action Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

The Pioneers opened the scoring 8:59 into the first period when freshman Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) scored on rebound shot. After Falcons goaltender Ray Jean made a stop on the initial shot by Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT), Grimson, who was trailing the play, pulled up and poked home the loose puck for his second goal of the season.

Trapp gave Sacred Heart a 2-0 lead with 50 seconds left in the opening period. O'Brien carried the puck over the blue line and fed a pass to Trapp through the slot who tipped the pass into the back of the net. Junior Todd Spencer (Brentwood, NH) also had an assist on Trapp's 10th goal of the year.

Sophomore Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) put the Pioneers up 3-0 1:37 into the second period. Parent took a centering pass from Trapp and blasted a shot past Jean for his ninth goal of the year.

Bentley got on the board with a power play goal at the 5:11 mark of the middle period. Falcon freshman Jeff Gumaer threw a puck out from behind the Sacred Heart net that deflected off of Pioneer defenseman Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) and past goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC)

Trapp gave the Pioneers a three goal lead back with a goal 11:11 into the second period. Just as a Pioneer power play expired, senior Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) found Trapp at the top of the face-off circle. Trapp popped a shot into the net for his second tally of the game and 11th of the season.

Gumaer cut the Falcon deficit to two with 2:23 left in the second. Gumaer took a cross ice pass from senior Brendan McCartin and poked the puck through the legs of Smith for his second goal of the game and 10th of the season.

The Falcons would get no closer as Smith made 23 saves in net to preserve the victory for the Pioneers, who out shot Bentley 44-25 for the game. Jean made 22 saves for the Falcons before being lifted midway through the second period in favor of Geordan Murphy who stopped 18 Pioneer shots in not allowing a goal the rest of the game.

The Pioneers (14-9-1, 11-6-1, AHA) are back in action Friday night when they host Mercyhust in the first game of a two game weekend series. Game time both Friday and Saturday night at Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
