Pioneers down Black Knights, 5-1
Jan. 21, 2005
MILFORD, CT (January 21) - Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) scored twice and Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) picked up three assists to lead the Sacred Heart Pioneers (8-12-1, 8-4-1 AHA) past the Army Black Knights (3-13-2, 2-9-2 AHA) 5-1 in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
It would be Billinghurst who would open the scoring 3:47 into the game. Kalen Wright (Candle Lake, SK) sent a lead pass to O'Brien down the right wing. He then sent a pass across the goal to a wide open Billinghurst who had no problems in finding the twine behind Army goalie Treye Kettwick (DeWitt, IA). O'Brien would set up Billinghurst for his second of the game just five minutes later, this time threading a pass between the legs of a Black Knight defender to Billinghurst who was streaking down the middle. The power play goal gave SHU a 2-0 lead just 8:54 in.
The Pioneers would take a 3-0 lead later in the first on Nick Kary's (Wetaskiwin, AB) third goal of the year. Kary found himself in the right spot after a Garrett Larson (Rycroft, AB) shot riccoched off the post, and banged home the rebound with 4:46 left in the first period.
The Pioneers added a fourth goal midway though the second, scoring as time expired on an Army penalty to go ahead 4-0. Wright would be the beneficiary of a nice O'Brien set up this time, firing the puck into a partially empty net thanks to a well timed pass from O'Brien. Larson also picked up a helper on the goal.
Army would net their lone goal late in the second on the power play. Chris Migliaro (Wallingford, CT) sent home a pass from Robb Ross (North St. Paul, MN) in the slot to bring Army to within 4-1 with just 49 seconds remaining. Corey Rudd (Baudette, MN) also assisted on the power play goal.
The lone goal in the third period came from Alexandre Parent (Boisbraind, QC). Wright started the play sending a cross ice pass to a streaking O'Brien. He then hit Parent with a head man pass which left him all alone with Kettewick.
Smith finished the night making 28 saves while Kettwick finished with 17.
The Pioneers and Black Knights face off again tomorrow in the back end of the home and home series at Tate Rink in West Point, NY. Face off is at 7:00 PM.
