Hanover, NH - Senior Garrett Overlock and junior David Jones each recorded one goal and one assist as the Dartmouth Big Green built a 3-0 lead and then hung on to beat Sacred Heart 4-2 in men's ice hockey action Friday night at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green opened the scoring at the 9:50 mark of the first period. Freshman Connor Shields won an offensive zone faceoff back to classmate Brandon Harrington. Harrington then immediately flipped a wrist shot under the arm of Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) to record his first collegiate goal.
Dartmouth went up 2-0 with 3:35 left in the opening period when Junior Tanner Glass scored on a Big Green 5 on 3 power play. Senior defenseman Garrett Overlock took the puck at the top of the blueline and fired a pass down low to Glass who only had to tip the puck into the open left side of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Overlock put the Big Green up 3-0 3:57 into the second period. Overlock was in front of the net to tip home a pass from sophomore David Jones for his second goal of the season.
The Pioneers got on the board at the 7:56 mark of the middle stanza when senior Chris Connerty (Rayham, MA) scored his fourth goal of the year. Connerty joined senior Andrew Billinghurst (Fort Collins, CO) on a rush up the ice and Billinghurst dumped the puck back to Connerty who put a shot into the top of the Big Green net.
Senior Rocco Molinaro (Dearborn, MI) cut the Pioneer deficit to one with just 31 seconds left in the second period. After taking a centering pass from junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, QC) Molinaro fired a shot from between the faceoff circles that found its way past Dartmouth goaltender Mike Devine. It was Molinaro's seventh goal of the season.
The Big Green regained their two goal lead 5:26 into the final period when Jones notched his ninth goal of the season. Overlock fed Jones a pass from behind the net and he ripped a shot that buzzed over the right shoulder of Smith.
Dartmouth outshot Sacred Heart 41-24 for the game. Smith made 37 saves for the Pioneers in goal while Devine stopped 22 shots for the Big Green.
Sacred Heart finished its non-conference schedule with a 3-3 record, including a 2-2 mark against ECAC Hockey League teams.
The Pioneers (13-9-1, 10-6-1 Atlantic Hockey) are back in action Saturday night when they host Atlantic Hockey rival Bentley. Game time at the Milford Ice Pavilion is set for 7:00 pm.
