Rochester, NY - Senior Ricky Walton scored the game-winning goal and added an assist and four different RIT players scored goals as RIT completed a two game sweep of Sacred Heart with a 4-2 win Saturday night at Ritter Arena.
RIT jumped on the board early when freshman Andrew Favot netted a powerplay goal 3:41 into the game. Justin Hofstetter fired a shot from the point and Favot was in front of the net to deflect it past Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) for his fourth goal of the year.
Sophomore Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON) tied the game with 1:19 left in the first period. Senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) led a rush on RIT goaltender Louis Menard. Parent was cancelled out by a Tiger defender but the puck slid out in front of the net and a trailing Jarman swooped in to slam the puck into the open net.
The Pioneers took the lead with 9:10 left in the second period on a powerplay goal by freshman Reade Wolansky (St. Albert, AB). Drew hit Jarman with a long pass and Jarman sent it cross ice to Wolansky. The freshman fired a snapshot over the shoulder of Menard to give SHU the lead.
Stevan Matic tied the game for RIT 4:08 into the third period. Brennan Sarazin fired a shot that was tipped by Matic to tie the game.
Walton's game winner came with left in the third period. Brennan Sarazin carried the puck into the offensive zone, weaving through defenders and was able to feed the puck through the slot to Walton. Walton simply had to redirect the puck past Drew for the game winner.
The Tigers out shot the Pioneers 37-22. Menard made 20 saves in the win while Drew stopped 33 shots in a losing effort.
Sacred Heart will face Holy Cross in a home-and-home series next weekend. The set opens Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
