Rochester, NY - Senior Simon Lambert had a goal and two assists and senior Matt Smith added two goals to lead RIT to a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at the Ritter Arena.
Both teams came out of the locker room with energy and the Pioneers jumped on top first on a goal by junior Paul Ferraro (Pleasantville, NY) at the 4:59 mark of the first period. Freshman Adam DeJong (Kitchener, ON) carried the puck behind the net and fed Ferraro a centering pass in the slot. Ferraro wound up and fired a shot through the five hole of Tigers goaltender Louis Menard for his third goal of the year.
RIT scored two power play goals in the second half of the first period to take a lead. Seniors Simon Lambert and Matt Smith combined on both in similar plays. With 6:35 left, Lambert fed the puck through the crease to Smith who tapped it in to an open corner. The duo combined for the second goal with 3:18 left.
The Pioneers evened the score with 8:44 left in the second period on a powerplay goal by junior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI). Junior Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) fired a shot from the point that got through towards the net and found a cutting Giosa who redirected the puck past Menard for his seventh goal of the year.
Lambert scored the game winning goal with 11:50 left in the game on a superb individual play. The senior carried the puck around the net and stuffed it past Pioneer goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) for what proved to be the deciding goal. Freshman Andrew Favot added an empty net goal with 1:57 left to seal the game.
The Pioneers outshot the Tigers 39-31 for the game. Menard made 37 saves in goal for RIT while Drew stopped 27 shots in the losing effort.
