Erie, PA - Sophomore goaltender Ryan Zapolski made 30 saves and had an assist and junior Chris Risi scored the game-winning goal as Mercyhurst posted a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Senior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI) scored the Pioneers only goal.
Sophomore Scott Pitt gave the Lakers an early lead with his ninth goal of the year 4:32 into the game. After a turnover at the Pioneer blue-line, Pitt took a pass from Matt Pierce and whistled a shot over the shoulder of Stefan Drew.
Risi netted a shorthanded tally 4:52 into the second to make it 2-0 Lakers. With SHU on the power-play, Brett Robinson lifted a clearing pass that landed on the stick of Risi who snapped a shot, beating Drew for a two goal lead. Zapolksi had the initial assist, sending Robinson on the clear.
The Pioneers were not able to get a puck past Zapolski until the final minute of play. Giosa got loose in the slot and, after his initial drive was turned aside, snapped home the rebound to put the Pioneers on the board. SHU kept the pressure on in the final seconds but could not get another puck behind Zapolski.
Drew was solid in goal again for the Pioneers, making 34 saves in a losing effort. The Lakers outshot the Pioneers 36-31 for the game.
