Milford, CT - Junior Brent Patry and senior Rob Tarrantino each scored two goals and Al Mazur and Matt Smith each had two assists as RIT shutout Sacred Heart, 4-0, in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The loss snapped the Pioneers (13-4-4, 10-2-4) four game winning streak and seven game unbeaten streak. It moved the Tigers (12-7-2, 11-3-1 AHA) to within one point of SHU for first place in the Atlantic Hockey standings.
The defeat was the first on home ice for the Pioneers this season. It was the first time Sacred Heart had been held scoreless since February 3, 2006, a 4-0 blanking at Army, and the first time SHU was held scoreless on home ice since March 15, 2003 when they were blanked 2-0 by Bentley in the first round of the MAAC playoffs.
In a game that was marred by 22 penalty calls, the Pioneers were unable to capitalize on their 9 opportunities with the man advantage. The Tigers scored twice in 11 chances with the extra skater.
Sacred Heart had opportunities to score but were continually stone walled by Jocelyn Guimond who made 30 saves to earn the shutout. Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith (St. Lambert, QC) stopped 28 shots in the loss, the first time he had allowed more then one goal in a game since December 1st at Air Force.
Patry opened the scoring for the Tigers with 4:24 left in the first period. Patry took a pass from Al Mazur., wound up, and fired a shot that beat Smith for a power play goal.
Tarantino scored his first goal of the night at the 15:17 mark of the second period to make it to 2-0. Smith tried to clear the puck from the zone with his stick, but ended up hitting Justin Hofstetter in the chest with the puck. Hofsteter sent the puck over the Matt Smith who fired a shot that was stopped by Smith. However, the rebound came to Tarantino who lifted the puck over Smith and into the net. Tarantino netted his second tally just 2:24 later on a blast from Mazur.
Patry put the game away for RIT with his second goal of the night at the 9:34 mark of the second period. On his second power play tally of the night, Patry scored off feeds from Anton Kharin and Justin Hofstetter.
