MILFORD, CT - Junior Bear Trapp scored the game-winning goal 1:16 into overtime, with asists from Nick Johnson and Eric Giosa to lead the Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team to a 5-4 win over visiting American International College Friday night.
Sacred Heart, 8-9-2 overall and 8-3-2 in Atlantic Hockey, took a 1-0 lead at 6:32 of the first on the sixth goal of the season by Dave Jarman, with assists from Alex Parent and Paul Ferraro. AIC tied the game with the only other goal of the period from Steve McLeod at 8:35 on a five-on-three power play.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead when Dave Turco scored at 9:09 of the second. It was all Sacred Heart the rest of the period, however. Johnson evened the game on the power play for SHU at 10:58 with an assist from Ferraro. Jarman got his second goal of the game at 16:29 of the second from Parent and Corey Laurysen. SHU took a 4-2 lead into the intermission when Parent scored from Jarman and Scott Marchesi at 19:22.
Sacred Heart outshot AIC 22-8 in the period.
SHU's Dave Grimson was called for the only penalty of the third period, tripping at 2:40. AIC made it count with an unassisted tally by Jereme Tendler :16 into the PP. Tom Mele tied the game for the Yellow Jackets at 7:25 and neither team could dent the opposing goalies the rest of the frame.
Trapp's blast in the OT, his sixth goal of the season, came from the right side of the goal and beat AIC goalie Dan Ramirez cleanly.
Junior Stefan Drew earned the win in net for the Pioneers with 25 saves. Ramirez finished with 39 for AIC, as the Pioneers outshot the Yellow Jackets 44-29.
