Milford, CT - Senior Bear Trapp (Regina, SK) and junior Erik Boisvert (Drumondville, QC) each scored two goals and senior Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) added three assists as Sacred Heart exploded for a season high six goals en-route to a 6-1 victory over UConn in Atlantic Hockey action Tuesday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The six goals were the largest offensive output for SHU since they scored six against UConn in game one of the AHA quarterfinals on March 7, 2008.
After being out-shot 14-5 in the first period. Sacred Heart dominated the rest of the game, outshooting UConn 41-15 in the final two stanzas. The Pioneers offensive onslaught featured four power-play goals in seven opportunities, including twoin the second period in three chances.
Junior Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) put the Pioneers on the board first with a power-play goal at the 7:30 mark of the first period. As SHU cycled the puck with the man advantage Nick Johnson (Windsor, ON) carried the puck behind the goal and hit his classmate with a perfect centering pass in the high slot which Laurysen one-timed past UConn netminder Beau Erickson for the goal. The Huskies tied the game with a power-play tally of their own when Brad Cooper sent a slap-shot past Stefan Drew midway through the first period.
Trapp started a string of five unanswered Pioneer goals 4:58 into the second period when he cleaned up a rebound following a shot by senior Eric Giosa (Northville, MI), who added a pair of assists himself. Boisvert scored both his goals on the power-play in a three minute window midway through the second period. Both tallies were hard slap-shots from the top of the face-off circles, coming off feeds from Grimson. The two scores gave Boisvert a team leading seven goals on the season.
Despite taking a three goal lead into the locker-room after two periods, the Pioneers kept the pressure on in the third, scoring two more times. Senior Kyle Tyll (Sandy Hook, CT) scored his first goal of the year at the 8:24 mark, blasting home a shot from the hash-marks after Giosa dropped a pass back to him.
Trapp completed the scoring with his fifth goal of the year at the 11:37 mark to record his first multi-point game of the season. The three points gave him 135 for his career, moving him into third place on the Sacred Heart all-time list. Drew earned the win for Sacred Heart by stopping 28 Husky shots on the night. Erickson made 40 saves in goal for UConn in a losing effort.
The Pioneers have the next 10 days off they prepare for the second half of the AHA season. SHU will begin a seven week sprint through the second half of the conference season with a two game series at Mercyhurst January 16-17. Both games can be heard across the Pioneer Radio Network.
