Milford, CT - Sophomores Matt Fairchild and Brett Nylander each recorded a goal and an assist as Air Force scored two goals late in the third period to post a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The Falcons and Pioneers split their weekend series.
The loss spoiled another spectacular effort by Sacred Heart goaltender Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB). A night after making 35 saves in Friday's SHU win, the junior stopped 39 Falcon shots Saturday night. Drew stopped 74 of the 78 shots he saw on the weekend.
After a scoreless first period, Junior Brent Olson got the Falcons on the baord at the 7:22 mark of the second. Fairchild and Olson came down the ice on a rush and Fairchild slid the puck through the crease to Olson who tipped it past Drew for his team leading tenth goal of the year.
The Pioneers tied the game with just two seconds left in the second. Sophomore Corey Laurysen (Ottawa, ON) blasted a shot from the point that rang off the goal post. However, the puck bounced to senior Scott Marchesi (South Portland, ME) who batted home the rebound to notch his first goal of the year and tie the score.
Nylander scored what turned out to be the game winning goal with 4:58 left in the third period. Derrick Burnett won a faceoff in the offensive end and Nylander's slap shot from the left point gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead. With just over two minutes left in the third period, Matt Charbonneau was called for holding giving the Pioneers a power play. However, Fairchild created a turnover in the neutral zone and skated down the right wing on a two-on-one breakaway. His wrister from the right circle beat Drew for a 3-1 advantage with 1:05 remaining.
Air Force out shot the Pioneers 42-17 for the game. Andrew Volkening made 16 saves to earn the win for the Falcons.
The Pioneers will host American International in a two game series next weekend. The teams meet Friday and Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off both nights is 7:05 pm with coverage on WICC 600 AM.
