Milford, CT - Senior Alexandre Parent (Boisbriand, QC) and junior Eric Giosa (Detroit, MI) each scored goals and junior Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) made 35 saves in goal as Sacred Heart held off a late Air Force rally to earn a 2-1 win in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
The win marked the first time the Pioneers have ever beaten Air Force in eight total meetings. With the victory, Sacred Heart (7-8-2, 7-2-2 AHA) moves to within one point of Air Force (9-6-4, 7-5-3 AHA) for first place in the Atlantic Hockey standings.
Air Force controlled the offensive play for much of the game, out-shooting Sacred Heart 36-19. However, it was SHU who built a two goal lead. Giosa got Pioneers started with 2:33 left in the first period. Junior Bear Trapp (Balcarres, SK) took the puck behind the net and fed Giosa a perfect centering pass. Giosa wound up and fired the puck past Falcon goaltender Andrew Volkening for his sixth goal of the year,
Parent and sophomore Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) connected on a play 5:23 into the second period to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Boisvert carried the puck into the offensive zone along the board and fed Parent a pass in the slot. The senior captain simply had to touch the puck to redirect it into the net for his team leading seventh goal of the season.
Air Force finally got on the board with 46 seconds left in the game on an extra-attacker, power play goal by Jeff Hajner. However, Drew was as superb in the final seconds as he was the rest of the night to preserve the victory for the Pioneers. Drew made several impressive saves throughout the night, including a handful while lying down.
Sacred Heart and Air Force will close out their weekend series Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
