Drew's 47 Saves Not Enough As Pioneers Fall to Niagara, 2-0
Jan. 2, 2009
Milford, CT - Sacred Heart netminder Stefan Drew (Oakbank, MB) made a career high 47 saves but the Sacred Heart offense couldn't get a puck past Niagara goaltender Juliano Pagliero and the Purple Eagles managed to push two past Drew to post a 2-0 win in men's ice hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
Junior Chris Moran had a goal and an assist to lead Niagara. Moran assisted on the first goal of the game at the 7:53 mark. The forward fired a shot on net from the top of the face-off circle that Drew stopped. However, the rebound landed on the stick of senior Vince Rocco who pounded into the left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the year.
After a scoreless second period, Moran scored gave Niagara some insurance with his seventh tally of the year 5:16 into the second period. With the Purple Eagles on the powerplay, Moran deflected a shot by Ryan Annesley to give Niagara the two goal advantage.
Drew made more than 40 saves for the second time in SHU's last three games and for the third time overall this season. His performance included 18 saves in the first period and 22 in the second period.
The Pioneer offense generated some scoring opportunities against Pagliero. Senior Dave Grimson (Mozart, SK) led the team with five shots on goal while Erik Boisvert (Drummondville, QC) and Patrick Knowlton (Colorado Springs, CO) each fired four shots on net.
Sacred Heart and Niagara close out their series Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Face-off is set for 7:05 pm.
