Before Sacred Heart: Chmiel was a member of the Junior A National Championship runner-up team (Pittsburgh Forge) '02. He was a W.P.I.A.L. All-Star ('97, '98, 99), first All-State High School ('99), and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Stellar Six ('98, '99) selection. Bernie was a member of the USA Hockey Select 15, 16, and 17 Mid-am team. He was also an MVP Defenseman ('97, 98, 99) and a member of the Prospects All-Star Game ('99, '00).
