FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshmen Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) and Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) of the Sacred Heart men's hockey team were named to the Atlantic Hockey Association All-Rookie Team on Thursday. Sacred Heart is the only team in the conference to have two All-Rookie selections.
Danforth led the Pioneers with 24 assists and 29 points in the regular season. He tied with AIC's David Norris, who was also an All-Rookie pick, for the conference rookie scoring lead with 28 points. Danforth has a team-high eight multi-point games this season. He three points in games at Holy Cross on Nov. 1 and at AIC on Feb. 14 when he scored the overtime game-winning goal in the Pioneers' 5-4 win while having two assists. Danforth finished the regular season with 11 points in the last 11 games.
Nylen is Sacred Heart's second-leading scorer from the blue line, scoring four goals with six assists so far this season. He was named Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week on Oct. 22 after recording his first two career points on a power play goal and an assist in the Pioneers' 3-1 win over Bentley. Nylen also had the game-winning goal against Niagara on Jan. 31, scoring with 0.9 seconds left to power Sacred Heart past the Purple Eagles 4-3. Nylen had a +5 rating in conference games.
Sacred Heart enters the 2014 Atlantic Hockey Tournament as the tenth-seed, travelling to Canisius for a first-round best-of-three series this weekend. Game one is Friday, March 7 at 7:05 p.m. at Buffalo State Ice Arena.
