MILFORD, Conn – The Sacred Heart Pioneers rebounded from Friday's heartbreaking overtime loss with a 2-1 win over UCONN Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion to salvage a weekend split with the Huskies. SHU closes out the regular season with an 11-16 Atlantic Hockey record. The Pioneers were 2-21-4 in the AHA last season.
Sophomore goalie Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, CT) made 25 saves to earn his seventh win of the season.
Freshman Evan Jasper (Whitby, Ontario) put SHU on the board at 3:20 of the first period. After UCONN won a face-off, Jasper forced a UCONN turnover and beat UCONN goalie Matt Grogan to put SHU up 1-0.
Drew George (Regina, Sask.) scored what would be the game-winner at 6:22 of the second period. George put in a power play goal for his third point of the weekend, with assists by freshman Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ontario) and sophomore Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, PA). George finishes the regular season with a team-high 12 goals.
UCONN cut into the Sacred Heart lead late in the second period with a goal by Brent Norris at 15:49. Brant Harris and Patrick Kirtland recorded assists on Norris' ninth goal of the season.
Unlike last night, the Pioneers held off a late rally from UCONN, killing off a final extra man chance after the Huskies pulled the goalie with 1:36 remaining.
Sacred Heart was excellent on the power play kill, denying UCONN on five odd man chances.
The Pioneers will hit the road for the AHA Playoffs next weekend, but the Pioneers opponent is still to be determined. SHU cannot finish lower than tenth in the conference and will face either Holy Cross or Canisius in the first round of the playoffs.
