Sacred Heart Travels To Defending AHA Champs Canisius For Weekend Series

Game Notes

Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart begins a stretch of four straight road games this weekend with two games at defending Atlantic Hockey tournament champions Canisius.
Last Time Out... Senior forward Chad Filteau tied last Sunday's game with Robert Morris at 1-1 6:51 into the second period, with the game going into overtime. The Colonials scored 16 seconds into the extra period to win the game 2-1 and sweep the weekend series.

All-Time vs. Canisius... Sacred Heart leads the overall series with Canisius 10-9-4. The Pioneers went 10-0-1 against the Golden Griffins from 2004-2008. Canisius has won seven of the last nine meetings with two ties.

Last Meeting... Canisius broke a 1-1 tie with three straight goals in a 6-3 win over the Pioneers on Jan. 12, 2013 at Webster Bank Arena. Preston Shupe had a hat trick for the Golden Griffins. Brian Sheehan  had a goal and an assist for Sacred Heart as Chad Filteau scored a goal.

So Close... Sacred Heart returned home for the first time since Nov. 30 last weekend, losing both games of its weekend series with Robert Morris by identical 2-1 scores. In Sunday's game, the Pioneers came back from 1-0 down to tie the game in the second period with the game eventually needing overtime. The Colonials scored 16 seconds into overtime to win the game. It was Sacred Heart's first series where it lost both games by one goal since Nov. 4-5, 2011 when the Pioneers lost at Air Force 2-1 and 3-2.

Vazzano Dazzling In Goal.. Goaltender Alex Vazzano has made 146 saves in the last four games with a 2.26 goals against average. Last weekend, Vazzano had a 2.02 goals against average and a .944 save percentage while making 68 saves.  Vazzano recorded Sacred Heart's first shutout since 2010 with 29 saves in the Pioneers' 3-0 win over UConn on Dec. 29. He has recorded at least 35 saves in seven games this season. 

Lake Back On The Scoresheet... After being kept off the scoresheet in three straight games, junior forward Ben Lake has scored two goals in the last four games. Lake scored in the Pioneers' 3-0 win at UConn on Dec. 29 and had Sacred Heart's lone goal against Robert Morris on Jan. 4. He is now tied with Drew George for the team lead in goals with five and is one goal away from tying his single-season high of six set last season. 

Scouting the Golden Griffins... Picked to finish fourth in the preseason AHA Coaches' Poll, Canisius is currently tied for fourth in the standings with a 6-4-1 record (13 points.). The Golden Griffins, the defending Atlantic Hockey tournament champions, are 5-2-1 in their last eight games. Canisius swept their series last weekend at Holy Cross by scores of 4-2 and 3-0. Sophomore goalie Keegan Asmundsen leads Atlantic Hockey with a .936 save percentage and a 2.37 goals against average.
