MILFORD, Conn. – Despite outshooting the RIT Tigers 38-35, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team could not get a goal off of RIT goalie Mike Rotolo as the Tigers completed a sweep of the Pioneers with a 4-0 win Saturday at Milford Ice Pavilion.
RIT (4-7-2, 3-3-0 AHA) got off to a fast start, scoring less than three minutes into the game. Danny Smith scored with assists from Andrew Miller and Garrett McMullen 2:52 into the game to make the score 1-0. Sacred Heart had 10 shots and two power plays in the opening period, but did not score on Rotolo. Coltyn Hansen (South Delta, B.C.), Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, Mo.), and Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) each had two shots for the Pioneers in the first period.
The Pioneers had a 15-7 advantage in shots in the second period as Rotolo made some highlight reel saves to keep the game 1-0. RIT took a 2-0 lead with 8:15 remaining in the second period as Dan Schuler knocked in the rebound of a Mike Colavecchia shot on the power play. The Tigers tacked on two more goals in the third, holding a 15-13 edge in shots in the final period.
Rotolo ended the game with 38 saves for the shutout. Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) had 31 saves for Sacred Heart. The Tigers were 2-for-6 on the power play as the Pioneers went 0-for-4. Minello had eight shots on goal for Sacred Heart as David Iacono (Newmarket, Ont.) had four.
Sacred Heart now goes on the road for a two-game series at Mercyhurst beginning on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:05 p.m.
