Tough Second Period Does In Pioneers At AIC
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team was outscored by the AIC Yellow Jackets 3-0 in the second period, falling 4-1 to AIC at Olympia Ice Center Saturday night. Junior forward Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, Mo.) scored his first goal of the season in the loss.
Both teams had 10 shots in the first time, but Sacred Heart (2-3-0, 1-1-0 AHA) goaltender Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) and his AIC (1-1-0, 1-0-0 AHA) counterpart Ty Reichenbach stood tall to keep the game scoreless. The Pioneers killed off a 5-on-3 Yellow Jackets power play early in the game when Chad Filteau (Regina, Sask.) and Evan Jasper (Whitby, Ont.) went to the penalty box 17 seconds apart. Sacred Heart had a power play 9:43 into the period but managed just one shot on goal.
AIC got on the board 39 seconds into the second period. Mike Dietrich and Chris Porter assisted on Brandon Lubin's tally that put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0. Brandon Fagerheim extended AIC's lead to 2-0 with 6:00 left in the period with an unassisted goal. AIC held the Pioneers to three shots in the period and took a 3-0 advantage with 1:26 left in the period on a Porter goal.
Sacred Heart finally broke through 44 seconds into the third period. With AIC on the power play, Will Rayner (Needham, Mass.) started a Pioneers breakout. Rayner got the puck to Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.), who found Sheehan streaking into the AIC zone. Sheehan then shot the puck past Reichenbach to make the score 3-1, tallying his first career shorthanded goal in the process. The Yellow Jackets tacked on a shorthanded goal of their own 1:45 later to take back the three-goal advantage at 4-1. Sacred Heart outshot AIC 8-6 in the final period but could not close the gap.
The Pioneers will take on a pair of Atlantic Hockey opponents on the road next weekend, beginning with a matchup at Holy Cross on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m
