MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team scored twice on the power play to win its Atlantic Hockey opener over the Bentley Falcons 3-1 at Milford Ice Pavilion Wednesday night.
Freshmen Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) each had two points in the game, their first points as Pioneers. Nylen scored a power play goal and had an assist while Danforth had two assists. The Pioneers matched their win total from last season with the victory Wednesday. Last season, Sacred Heart's second win came against Bentley on Feb. 23, 2013 at Milford Ice Pavilion.
Sacred Heart (2-1, 1-0 Atlantic Hockey) got on the scoreboard 7:39 into the game when Drew George (Regina, Sask.) scored from the left circle, assisted by Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.) and Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.). It was George's third goal of the season and Carroll's first career point. The Pioneers went up 2-1 at 12:18 on Nylen's (Lawrenceville, Ga.) first career goal. Nylen scored on the power play from the blue line with assists from fellow freshmen Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) and Danforth.
Bentley (1-2, 0-1) got on the board at 14:32 of the first period. Will Suter came flying into the Sacred Heart zone and fed Max French for the goal, making the score 2-1. The Pioneers extended the lead back to two about midway through the second period on the power play. Nylen fired a shot from the point that was re-directed by Will Rayner (Needham, Mass.) in front of the net to make the score 3-1. Goaltender Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) made the score stand up, making 14 saves in the third period as Sacred Heart won its second game of the season.
The Falcons outshot the Pioneers 38-19. Vazzano made 37 saves with Bentley goaltender Branden Komm making 16. Sacred Heart was 2-for-3 on the power play and killed all three Bentley chances with the extra man.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 with a 7 p.m. game at #17 Rensselaer.
