Alex Vazzano Named Atlantic Hockey Goaltender Of The Week
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Atlantic Hockey Association announced on Tuesday that Sacred Heart sophomore goaltender Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) was named the Travel Team USA Goaltender of the Week for his performance in the Pioneers' 2-1 win at UMass Lowell on Oct. 11.
Vazzano made 35 saves in Sacred Heart's monumental upset of the River Hawks, his first career start for the Pioneers since transferring from Vermont. Twenty-eight of his 35 saves came in the first two periods as Sacred Heart led 1-0. He made two saves in the last three minutes to preserve Sacred Heart's 2-1 lead and give the Pioneers their second win in three years over a top-10 team.
Junior forward Drew George (Regina, Sask.) was named to the Atlantic Hockey Weekly Honor Roll. George scored both goals in the win over UMass Lowell. His first goal opened the game, scoring on the power play 3:48 into the game. After UMass Lowell tied the game at 4:24 of the third period, George put Sacred Heart back in front. Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.) won a faceoff in the River Hawks zone and found George, who fired a shot under the blocker of the UMass Lowell goalie for the eventual game-winning goal. Friday night was George's first multi-goal game since recording a hat trick at Connecticut on Feb. 10, 2012.
The Pioneers open Atlantic Hockey play on Wednesday night against Bentley at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7 p.m.
