MILFORD, Conn. – Goaltenders Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) and Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) stopped all 27 shots they faced on Sunday as the Sacred Heart men's hockey team defeated the Simon Fraser Clan 3-0 in an exhibition game at Milford Ice Pavilion.
After a back-and-forth start to the first period, the Pioneers got on the board 12:01 into the game. Some nifty passing between Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.) and Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.) led to a Drew George (Regina, Sask.) shot from the low slot over the goaltender's shoulder, making the score 1-0. Sacred Heart outshot Simon Fraser 10-9 in the first period.
The Pioneers extended their lead at 7:25 of the second period. Freshman Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) backchecked the puck off a Simon Fraser forward and fed the puck to senior Chad Filteau (Regina, Sask.), who scored on the breakaway to make the score 2-0. A pair of freshmen assisted on Sacred Heart's third goal at 14:27 of the second period. Nick Lotito (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Erlich Doerksen (Toronto, Ont.) set up Jake Lynes (Ellicott City, Md.) for his goal that made the score 3-0.
Vazzano made 20 saves in two periods with Bodnarchuk stopping seven shots in the third period to ensure the shutout. Carroll led Sacred Heart with four shots as four other Pioneers had three shots. Sacred Heart outshot Simon Fraser 29-27 for the game, with neither team scoring on the power play. Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play with seven shots each.
Sacred Heart opens its 2013-14 season on Friday, Oct. 11 with a 7 p.m. game at preseason #1 UMass Lowell.
