BRIDGEPORT, CT (November 17, 2012) - The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team carried a 2-0 lead in the third period against American International but the Yellow Jackets stung the Pioneers with two of their own in the final stanza to force overtime and a tie in Atlantic Hockey action at the Webster Bank Arena.
The Pioneers and Yellow Jackets take a point each in the AHA standings but both remain winless in conference play this year. SHU is now 0-9-2 overall and 0-7-2 in league while AIC sits at 3-5-2 overall and 0-3-2.
Sacred Heart senior netminder Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) was unblemished through the first two and half periods before AIC broke through. Legatto finished with 35 saves, posted 15 in the second period.
Sophomore Ben Lake (Calgary, AB) opened the scoring 3:38 into the first period as he sniped one in the top-right corner past Ben Meisner. Freshman Matthew Solomon (Toronto, ON) was credited with the assist.
The Pioneers made it 2-0 just under six minutes into the second period when sophomore Brian Sheehan (St. Louis, MO) finished off a rebound of a senior Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) shot. Legatto kept the Yellow Jackets off the board until the 8:58 mark of the third period when they converted on their second power play chance.
Alexander MacMillan cleaned-up a loose puck in front of the net to cut it to 2-1. AIC struck again at 13:17 when Blake Peake poked a rebound past Legatto. The Yellow Jackets would get one more power play opportunity before the end of regulation but couldn't find the back of the net.
Both teams played an even overtime with SHU firing four on goal to AIC's three before the final horn sounded. Meisner finished with 37 saves on the afternoon.
The Pioneers will be back in action right after Thanksgiving when they host Princeton on Friday afternoon, November 23rd. The puck will drop at the Webster Bank Arena at 4:00 pm.
