(Bridgeport, CT) – Matt Gingera (Winnipeg, MB) scored with 35 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Sacred Heart Men's Hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the UConn Huskies Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Gingera forced a turnover in the near corner, then darted straight to the front of net on his backhand. Protecting the puck, he waited for Husky goaltender Garrett Bartus to commit before sliding in the game-winning goal at 4:25 of OT for his 11th goal of the season and his 98th career point.
Drew George (Regina, SK) gave the Pioneers an opportunity for OT with the game-tying goal at 3:32 of the third, also scoring unassisted on a turnover in the far corner. He skated to the goal-mouth and fired a wrist shot for his 11th goal of his freshman year, extending his personal point streak to seven consecutive games. That followed 1:30 after the game's first goal, with UConn breaking a third-period 0-0 tie at 2:02 on a power play goal by Cody Sharib. He followed a shot by Marcello Ranallo for a rebound goal to give the Huskies a brief lead.
Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) made 31 saves for the victory, helping lead the Pioneers to a season-best three-game unbeaten streak. SHU took three of four points in the weekend series with UConn, waiting an extra day to follow up their 5-5 tie Friday night after a water main break at Webster Bank Arena postponed the game from its originally scheduled time of 4:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
Both George and Gingera registered five points in the weekend series, with George totaling four goals and an assist and Gingera scoring the one goal with four assists. George now has seven goals and four assists for 11 points over his seven-game point streak.
Sacred Heart is back in action next Friday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Holy Cross to begin a home-and-home weekend series. The Pioneers will host the Crusaders Saturday, February 18 at 4:00 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena.
