• Atlantic Hockey Announces New Playoff Format for 2012 Postseason

    Following the Atlantic Hockey Directors’ annual spring meeting, which took place in Boston on Monday and Tuesday, May 16 & 17, 2011, Commissioner Bob DeGregorio announced that the Atlantic Hockey 2012 post-season tournament will have a new format.

    Patrick Knowlton, the captain of the 2010-11 Sacred Heart Pioneer men’s hockey team, has signed a professional contract with the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers.

    The Sacred Heart University men’s ice hockey team was eliminated from the Atlantic Hockey Association Playoffs with a 4-0 loss at Air Force in game two of the quarterfinals, Saturday night. The Pioneers finished the season 6-25-6 overall, while the Falcons sweep the series 2-0 and move on with a record of 18-11-6.

    The Sacred Heart University men’s ice hockey team eliminated a two-goal deficit early in the second period, but Air Force freshman forward Tony Thomas gave the Falcons the lead back with just 53 second remaining the frame, with the eventual game-winner of a 7-5 decision for AFA in game one of the Atlantic Hockey Association Quarterfinals.

    Sacred Heart takes on the Bentley Falcons in the First Round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament. The Pioneers are 1-2-0 against the Falcons this year, splitting two games at John A. Ryan Rink and losing in OT at the Arena at Harbor Yard. SHU is 10-13 all-time in postseason play at the Division I level, including a 9-9 record in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament. Last season, the Pioneers reached the Atlantic Hockey Finals against RIT after knocking off three-time defending conference champion Air Force 2-1 on a goal by Patrick Knowlton with 42 seconds left in regulation.

The Pioneers close out the regular season with these two games, as they get ready to face either UCONN, Bentley, or Army on the road next weekend in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs. The Black Knights are tied with Bentley for ninth place with 22 points, and sit just one point behind seventh place UCONN. SHU and Army skated to a 4-4 tie at West Point earlier this season on November 20.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Pioneers as they improved to 4-18-5 overall and 4-11-5 in the AHA, while the Falcons fell to 7-14-5 and 6-10-4.
