NEW BRITAIN, CT (September 22) - The tricky conditions, a rain-shortened event was cut to a 27-hole format, and a line-up consisting of a senior, two sophomores and two freshmen could have been the recipe for a tough stretch at their first tournament of the year. However, the resilient Pioneers, finished with a team total of 476, which was good for eight out of 12 teams, 9 strokes behind Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut State University, who are perennial contenders for the NEC crown.
Setting the pace for the Pioneers was the New Jersey connection of Patrick Fillian who finished tied for 9th (76, 37, +6) and Tommy Campbell, who finished tied for 19th (76, 40, +9). Fillian and Campbell, both freshmen, have provided Coach Giaquinto with cautious optimism as they kick off the 04-05 campaign. "For the first tournament this year, although we didn't perform to our fullest potential, our finish was acceptable...acceptable only because it was our first tournament playing a tricky course in difficult conditions." Director of Pioneer Golf / Head Men's Coach Michael Giaquinto said.
The Pioneers will depart Friday morning for a practice round and compete on Saturday and Sunday in the Dartmouth College Men's Invitational to be held at the Hanover Country Club.
