Men's Golf In Seventh Place After Round One Of NEC Championships

DAYTONA BEACH, Fl.— The Sacred Heart University men's golf team opened the 2018 Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championship tied for seventh overall. The Pioneers carded an opening score of 316 at the Hills course at LPGA International on Friday. 

Freshman Saptak Talwar paced the Pioneers in his first NEC Championship round, finishing with a 2-over par 74 to tie for fourth overall. He led the field with 14 pars on the day to go along with three bogeys and a birdie on a par five 16th. Senior Connor Cunningham finished with a six-over 78 in round one. He picked up a birdie on the par-five 14th, finishing tied for 20th on the leaderboard. 

Junior Alex Manner and senior Tom D'Andrea both carded a 10-over par 82 to tie for 32nd overall. Senior Matt Shubley closed out the Pioneers scoring group with an 11-over 83 to finish tied for 38th after the opening 18.

CCSU claimed the overall lead after round one, finishing with a three-over par 291 on Friday. Robert Morris and Bryant round out the top three at +17 and +18 respectively. SHU sits just one stroke back of LIU Brooklyn for sixth place.

The Pioneers continue the tournament tomorrow morning.
