FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Redshirt-Junior Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) was named the Northeast Conference Men's Golfer of the Year on Friday, becoming the third Sacred Heart men's golfer to earn the honor.
Ballo won the 2014 NEC Individual title at the conference championship on May 4, carding a six-under 66 in the final round to force a playoff with Bryant's Ryan Tombs. He won the playoff to become the first Pioneer since 2012 to earn medalist honors at the NEC Championship. Ballo won three straight tournaments in the spring, including the Rhody Invitational and the D-I New England Championships.
He led the NEC in scoring average with a league-low score of 73.6 per round. Ballo is the third Pioneer to be named NEC Men's Golfer of the Year. Patrick Fillian was twice named Golfer of the Year in 2008 and 2009 with Josh Salah earning the honor in 2012.
Ballo shot a five-over 77 in his second round of the NCAA Regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio on Friday. He was two-over through nine holes, but bogeyed four of his first seven holes in his second nine. Ballo did birdie his final hole to finish at five over par. He is now +7 for the tournament with the final round tomorrow morning.
