BALTIC, Conn. – Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) took the course at Mohegan Sun Country Club by storm on Saturday, carding a seven-under 65 to take the lead at the D-I New England Championships. Sacred Heart, as a team, is in second place after the first round.
Ballo leads the individual competition by four strokes over Will Betts of Hartford. He had eight birdies in his round, going -4 on the par fours. Ross Kronberg (New Canaan, Conn.) finished the opening round in the top-10, carding a one-over 73 to place tied for eighth. Will Smittle (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had a 75 on Saturday to place tied for 17th. The Pioneers' scoring group was rounded out by Jeff Cohen (Windham, N.H.), who had a four-over 76 to finish the opening round in 23rd place.
Sacred Heart had a team score of 289 on Saturday, just one stroke over par. The Pioneers are two strokes behind Hartford heading into Sunday's final round. UConn is third, three strokes behind Sacred Heart. Rhode Island and Bryant round out the top five.
