PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Led by an even-par round of 71 from Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.), the Sacred Heart men's golf team took a first round lead Saturday at the Rhody Invitational at Green Valley Country Club. The Pioneers lead Bryant and Williams by two strokes heading into Sunday's final round.
Ballo was the only golfer on Saturday to shoot par. He leads Williams' Grant Raffel by one stroke for the individual title heading into Sunday. Sacred Heart had two other golfers finish in the top-20 on Saturday. Ross Kronberg (New Canaan, Conn.) carded a four-over 75, putting him in a tie for eighth. Will Smittle (Scarsdale, N.Y.) tied for 15th place with a six-over 77. Jeff Cohen (Windham, N.H.) rounded out the Pioneers' scoring group with an 80, finishing the day tied for 26th. A.J. Correia (Bedford, N.H.), who was not in the scoring group, had an 83 to put himself tied for 40th.
Sacred Heart had a team score of 303, +19 over par. Bryant and Williams were +21 with Fordham +22 and the host Rhode Island +25.
The final round is on Sunday morning.
