SHU's Zambarano Named NEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Nov. 9, 2009
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (November 9, 2009) - Sacred Heart sophomore linebacker Michael Zambarano (Natick,MA) was named the Northeast Conference Co-Defensive of the Week announced Monday afternoon by the league office. Zambarano shares this week's award with junior linebacker Elias Navarro of Robert Morris.
Zambarano's first start this season resulted in a strong defensive effort worthy of his first career weekly honor. The sophomore linebacker accounted for a career-high 11 tackles (10 solo), three tackles for loss, and a pass break-up in Sacred Heart's 24-14 NEC win over Bryant. Zambarano made two huge hits on back-to-back plays with SHU clinging to a 17-14 lead in the third quarter. Forcing Bryant to punt on its opening drive of the second half, Zambarano stuffed the Bulldogs' ball carrier for no gain before sacking the quarterback for a 10-yard loss on the next play.
On the season, Zambarano is fifth on the team with 43 tackles, 29 solo. He has four stops for a loss, a sack and three pass break-ups as well.
