FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 2, 2008) - Sacred Heart backfield mates, senior Evin Jones (Pennsauken, NJ) and freshman Garry Coles (Southington, CT), took home a pair of Northeast Conference Weekly Football awards announced on Monday afternoon. Jones, this week's Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athlete of the Week, was named the Offensive Player of the Week while Coles took home Rookie of the Week honors.
Claiming the starting tailback job in the off-season, Jones ran the ball 22 times for 210 yards and four touchdowns to power Sacred Heart past Assumption, 42-21, in the season opener. Jones' eruption, which accounted for 171 second-half rushing yards, could not have been more timely for the Pioneers. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Sacred Heart used touchdowns of five and 50 yards from Jones to pull ahead, 21-14, midway through the third quarter. Taking over for former 1,200-yard rusher Jason Payne, Jones averaged an impressive 9.4 yards per carry.
Coles revealed play-making ability during his first collegiate action, amassing 131 all-purpose yards in helping Sacred Heart double up Assumption, 42-21. With Sacred Heart trailing by seven at halftime, the freshman running back jump-started the Pioneers' attack by opening the second half with a 43-yard kickoff return that placed the ball on the opposition's 39-yard line and set up the game-tying touchdown. Coles broke through for his first collegiate touchdown later in the third quarter when he sprung off-tackle for 68 yards and a 28-14 Pioneers' lead. He tallied 82 rushing yards on four carries and made one reception for a six-yard gain.
The duo will the Pioneers back into action this Saturday night against Bentley College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm while fans can listen and follow the action live via the audio and video links on SacredHeartPioneers.com.
