FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 11, 2008) - The 2008 Sacred Heart football season will kick-off on Saturday, August 30th with the Pioneers playing host to Assumption College as head coach Paul Gorham released the upcoming schedule for the 16th season on the gridiron for the university.
The Pioneers open the year with a pair of home games against the Greyhounds on August 30th and hosting Bentley on September 6th. Sacred Haert openend 2007 on the road at Assumption, dealing the Greyhounds a 41-20 loss. SHU will renew another match-up this season facing Bentley for the first time since the 1997 season.
A pair of road games will close out the month of September and put the final touches on non-conference slate. The Pioneers will travel to Iona on Saturday, September 20th for to take on the Gaels in 13th meeting between the two schools. Iona holds a 7-6 edge after 34-10 win over the Pioneers this past fall. SHU heads to Poughkeepsie, New York on September 27th to take on the Marist Red Foxes. The Pioneers evened the all-time series at 3-3 after a 41-34 shootout win at home in 2007.
Sacred Heart will open their 11th season of competition in the Northeast Conference when they play host to Robert Morris on Saturday October 4th. The Pioneers will be looking to end a 12-game conference losing streak after finishing 0-6 in league play last season.
The remaining league schedule will alternate home and away the rest of the season. Defending NEC Champion Albany pays a visit to Campus Field on October 18th while Wagner comes to Fairfield on November 1st and Central Connecticut will close out the regular season on November 15th.
SHU will hit the road for league games at Saint Francis (PA) on October 11th, new memeber Duquesne on October 25th and Monmouth on November 8th.
