Sacred Heart Football Program Signs 16 Players on National Signing Day

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 6, 2008) - Sacred Heart University head football coach Paul Gorham announced the signing of 16 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the upcoming 2008 season. This year's recruiting class includes four players from the state of Connecticut along with players from the states of California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

"We are very excited about this class," stated Gorham. "We feel like we have filled a lot of needs with several players with not only multiple talents at their positions but the ability to also make an impact on special teams. I am looking forward to getting all of them in here and getting to work come August."

2008 Sacred Heart Football Signings

Bill Romaniello (Monroe, CT) - Offensive Line - Masuk H.S. Romaniello, from nearby Monroe, is a 6'2", 275 pound offensive lineman. During 2007, his senior season, Romaniello led his team to the SWC Conference Championship and the Class L State Championship games. For his efforts in 2007, Romaniello earned CHSCA first team All-State honors. As a junior, he helped lead his team to the conference title game and was recognized with All-SWC second team honors.

Garry Coles (Southington, CT) - Running Back - Southington H.S. / Kent School Coles is a 6'0", 190 pound athlete who starred at Southington High School before spending this last season at The Kent School. Coles was a team captain for the Blue Knights and was selected to play in the Connecticut Senior All-Star game. As a junior and senior, Coles was selected as a first team all-conference running back and also earned second-team all-state honors. He holds the Southing High school record for longest interception return for a touchdown. While at Kent, he was a first team all-conference and All-New England player and also earned his team's MVP honors.

Mike Lacaria (Watertown, CT) - Linebacker - Watertown H.S. / Bridgton Academy Lacaria is a 6'0", 210 pound linebacker out of Watertown High School and Bridgton Academy. Lacaria was a CHSCA All-State linebacker for the Indians in 2006. He was named an All-NVL defensive player in both his junior and senior seasons. Lacaria, a team captain as a senior, was named the Defensive MVP of the Connecticut / Rhode Island All-Star game.

Tyler Elliott (Jewett City, CT) - Wide Receiver - Griswold H.S. Elliott is a 5'10", 180 pound wide receiver out of Griswold High School. Elliot was an all-area wide receiver as a senior, leading the Eastern Connecticut Conference in touchdown receptions. Elliot was named to the conference's first team as a receiver.

Chris Mandas (Mission Viejo, CA) - Linebacker - Trabuco Hills H.S. Mandas comes to Sacred Heart out of Trabuco Hills High School. A 5'11", 215 pound linebacker, Mandas was named to the All-Southwestern CIF first team defense. The Mission Viejo native, home to Pioneer All-NEC wide receiver Steve Tedesco, also played at Murrieta Valley High School. As a linebacker he was named the team's 2006 Defensive MVP and to the second team All-Southwestern CIF.

Rueben McIntosh (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - Defensive Back - Cardinal Gibbons H.S. McIntosh is a 5'9", 175 pound defensive back who played at Cardinal Gibbons High School. McIntosh was an All-Broward County Selection as a defensive back after posting 58 tackles, an interception and four pass break-ups his senior season. He was the winner of the team's top Defensive Back Award after his senior season. As a junior, McIntosh made 32 tackles with two picks and four break ups.

Jared Kemp (Miami, FL) - Wide Receiver - Miami Killian H.S. Kemp was an All-Dade County wide receiver for Miami Killian High School his senior season. The 5'9", 170 pound wideout was selected to play in the Dade / Broward County All-Star game that was played at the Miami Dolphin's Pro Player Stadium. Kemp pulled down 27 passes his senior season for nearly 500 yards to go with four touchdowns.

D.J. Doyle (Thurmont, MD) - Defensive Back - Catoctin H.S. Doyle, 6'2", 200lbs, was a three year starter at quarterback and defensive back for Catoctin High School where he led the team to Maryland State Regional Final his senior year. He took his team to the Maryland State Region Semifinals both his sophomore and junior seasons. Doyle was an All-State honorable mention as a junior and senior as well as an all-county and All-MVAL selection. Doyle accounted for 80% of Catoctin's offensive production in his three years as a starter. He racked up 683 yards of total offense with 15 TD's and 87 tackles and three interceptions defensively his senior year.

Michael Zambarano (Natick, MA) - Linebacker - Natick H.S. A team captain at Natick High School, Zambarano is a 5'11", 215 pound linebacker. A team MVP, Zambarano was twice named the Metro-West Player of the Week as well and a Metro-West All-Star. He was voted an all-star by both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald newspapers. He also excelled in the classroom earning Boston Globe All-Star Scholastic honors. He holds the Natick High school records for career tackles (370) and tackles in a single season (151).

Matt Linnehan (Worcester, MA) - Defensive Line - Dougherty H.S. / Bridgton Academy Linnehan is a 6'1", 255 pound defensive lineman out of Dougherty High School and Bridgton Academy. Linnehan was named his team's MVP as a senior and also earned Central Massachusetts All-Star honors. He was deemed and all-star by the Worcester Telegram as well and picking up first team all-conference honors.

Justin Martel (Manchester, NH) - Offensive Line - Manchester Central H.S. / Bridgton Academy The 6'4", 320 pound Martel comes to Sacred Heart out of Manchester Central High School and Bridgton Academy. Martel was named a first team all-conference lineman in both his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Martel was named all-area and earned Division 1 All-State first team honors.

James Moore (Nashua, NH) - Fullback - Bishop Guertin H.S. Moore, a 6'0", 235lb fullback, was named a team captain at Bishop Guertin High School where he was the recipient of the Coach's Award as a senior. Moore as named first team All-State by the Nashua Telegraph and Lowell Sun newspapers as a senior. Moore also earned first team All-State honors from the Union Leader.

Justin Embler (Cinnaminson, NJ) - Defensive Line - Cinnaminson H.S. Embler was named team captain of the Cinnaminson High School football team as a senior and also stars on the school's wrestling team. Embler, a 6'3", 225 pound defensive lineman, was named All-South Jersey Group 2, All-Patriot Division and All-County on defense his senior season. On the mat, Embler is currently ranked third in New Jersey among high school heavyweight wrestlers.

Jonathan Sam (Paramus, NJ) - Defensive Back / Kick Returner - Bergen Catholic H.S. Sam, a 5'10", 180 pound defensive back for New Jersey powerhouse Bergen Catholic High School. Sam turned in 30 total tackles his senior year, coming up with two interceptions and three fumble recoveries. As a kick returner, Sam had 10 returns on the year for 226 yards and one score. For his efforts, Sam was named to the All-NNJIL C League third team.

Keith Gillum (Fultonville, NY) - Offensive Line - Fonda-Fultonville H.S. Gillum stands at 6'5" and 260 pounds and comes to Sacred Heart out of Fonda-Fultonville High School. Gillum was named a District All-Star and was also named a first team all-conference offensive lineman.

Rick Rossi (Moosic, PA) - Wide Receiver / Tight End - Riverside H.S. / Milford Academy (NY) Rossi is a 6'2" 215 pound wide receiver/tight end from Riverside High School and Milford Academy in New York. While at Riverside, Rossi posted 44 receptions for 809 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning Team Offensive MVP honors and first team all-conference honors as a tight end. The team captain was chosen to play in the PA PSFCA East West All-Star game. Defensively, he was a second team all-conference pick as a linebacker. While at Milford Academy, Rossi had 28 catches for 390 yards and eight scores while twice earning Player of the Game recognition. He was ranked #47 by and #48 by in the Prep School rankings.
