ALBANY, N.Y. (October 13, 2007) - The Albany Great Danes piled up 273 yard on the ground en route to a 38-7 win over the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers Saturday afternoon in Northeast Conference action. The Pioneers got 82 yards on the ground from senior Jason Payne (Cortlandt Manor, NY) as they drop their fifth-straight game and fall to 2-5 on the year and 0-3 in NEC play.
Albany (3-3, 1-0 NEC) got rushing touchdowns from running backs David McCarty and Justin Gannon and another from quarterback Vinny Esposito. McCarty led all rushers with 97 yards on 14 carries in the win, evening the Great Danes' record at 3-3 and gives them a 1-0 start in conference play.
The Albany rushing attack wasted little time in grabbing the lead as McCarty capped the Great Danes' opening drive running it in from six yards out, finishing off a nine-play drive. Albany made it 14-0 after another nine-play drive to start the second quarter with quarterback Vinny Esposito hitting Tim Bush from 24-yards out.
Albany had a chance to add points once again, putting together a seven-play drive that stalled out at the SHU 26-yard line. Place kicker Jason Fralicker lined up for a 43-yard attempt but his kick came off low and into the line setting SHU up with the ball with 8:07 to go in the half.
The Pioneers (2-5, 0-3 NEC) found an answer on offense and put together a 12-play drive to cut the UAlbany lead in half. Payne ripped of runs of 13, 18 and 14 yards on the drive and the Pioneers converted on third and goal from the Albany seven. Quarterback Dale Fink (Swansea, IL) found Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) at the five and the sophomore wideout battled through a trio of tacklers to find the endzone, cutting the lead to 14-7 with 55 seconds left in the half.
Looking to steal the momentum back, Albany moved into position to attempt at worse a field goal at the Pioneer 44-yard line with 10 second left after a 17-yard McCarty run. McCarty broke three SHU tackles on the third down run as the team took their second timeout after the play. With a timeout in their pocket, Albany took one last shot at the endzone before any field goal try and came up with the big play. Esposito lofted one up toward the back left corner and Jason Smith got behind three Pioneer defensive backs to haul it in for the score and 21-7 lead.
The Great Danes kept their foot on gas out of the half, forcing a SHU three-and-out and taking the ensuing possession and pounding out an 11 play drive over 59-yards capped by an Esposito four-yard run.
UAlbany held the ball for 37:00 minutes, running 86 plays and piling up 524 yards and 28 first downs of total offense in the win. Defensively, the Great Danes held the Pioneers to just 12 first downs and 187 yards of offense, 70 coming on their lone scoring drive. SHU was held to just two-of-11 on third down and turned the ball over three times.
Esposito threw for 236 yards and two scores, completing 17-of-27. Tim Bush caught four balls for 66 yards and a score to lead the receiving corps.
The Pioneers will return home next weekend to play host to the Marist Red Foxes in a non-conference match-up. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
