Sacred Heart Pioneers (2-3, 1-0)

Air Arciaga: Tyler Arciaga's three TD passes today give him 26 for his career. He trails on Justin Holtfreter (40) on the all-time list. He also increased his career passing percentage to .587.

Jumpin' Jarry: Senior tight end Justin Jarry caught his first career touchdown pass today, a 12-yarder that clinched the win in the fourth quarter.

Sweet Special Teams: The Sacred Heart kickoff and punt return teams racked up big yardage today. Steve Tedesco returned two punts for a combined 98 yards (a long of 53), while Evin Jones had 74 yards on two kickoff returns (a long of 53).

Derek Right on the Mark: Derek Marks continues to impress with his punting. He is averaging 39 yards a punt this season, with four inside the opponent's 20. He nailed one inside the opponent's ten today late in the fourth quarter to help the Pioneers hold on.

Coach Quotables - Here is what head coach Paul Gorham had to say about today's game:

On the last play of the game.... "When the ball was intercepted it was a sense of relief. When things don't go you way like they haven't for us in the last few weeks, you get very apprehensive. It's important to start turning negatives into positives and that was a big one right there."

On the long field goal.... "Yeah it was something that made you wonder what the heck was happening, especially with the way our kicking game has been. Last week a kicker hits the upright and it goes through, this week the long one. But I felt when we came out and made them punt on the first possession of the second half, we forgot all about it."

On the play of the offensive line... "They were able to settle in nicely and contain Wagner's front four well. That allowed us to be able to do set-up a good mix of pass and run plays."

On the Pioneers Rushing Defense... "Our goal is always to stop the run and force the other team to pass. Wagner wanted to use the power run so our effectiveness in containing that was a huge factor in the game."

On the Defense in the second half... "We preached to them about making the necessary adjustments and make them stick. I think one of the most important parts of the game was when we stopped them three and out on the first series of the second half. It gave us an emotional jolt and got as going for the second half."

On the importance of the win.... "This is the first time we've been 1-0 in the Northeast Conference since I've been here. After some of the down turns the last few weeks, this was huge mentally and emotionally."

Wagner Seahawks (4-1, 0-1)

Czech Mate: Piotr Czech's 54 yard field goal to end the first half was a Northeast Conference record, and 12 yards longer than his previous career high.

All in the Family: Sophomore QB Matt Abbey is the cousin of former Wagner QB John Sciarra who broke all the Wagner passing records before graduating last year. Abbey is picking up where his cuz left off. He threw for 305 yards today.
