FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart football team lost its season opener to Lafayette College today. Here are the post-game comments from head coach Paul Gorham:
On hanging in there with a team that won the Patriot League title the last two years. "We competed. We got down by two touchdowns early and could have gotten run out of here, but we came back. I am very pleased we didn't roll over."
On the return of Joey Henley after his season-ending injury last year and the fact he was such a factor today: "That kid is a player. Simple as that - a player. We were going to keep him out a couple of weeks but he was in here every day wanting to play, practically begging me to let him play. We limited his number of plays today but I couldn't keep him off the field."
On going for it on fourth down deep in his territory in the fourth quarter: "With the new timing rules and the fact that the clock moves a lot faster, I didn't think we could plan on getting the ball back with just over four minutes left. But you have to be able to gain six inches."
On the carryover into next week: "I'll get a better idea of how I feel about this game when I see how we play next week. I saw some good things today, but I also saw a lot of things we need to work on. I am not satisfied because we lost a close game. Heck, this was a WINNABLE game and we didn't get it done. So now we have to work on improving and carrying the good things from today into the game at Marist next week."
