Game #1 - SHU 41 - Assumption 20 - Post Game Notes
Sept. 1, 2007
The Pioneer defense held Assumption to just five of 14 on third down in the win and just 58 yards on the ground. SHU racked up 487 yards of total offense and converted 10 of their 15 third down opportunities.
The win marked the first opening day win for Sacred Heart since a 24-19 win on the road at Saint Peter's in 2003. The win also came on August 30th, the only other time in program history SHU has played a game in the month of August.
The Pioneer's 41 points is their largest point total since a 53-45 win over Saint Francis (PA) at home in 2005. That game also marked the last time SHU picked up 25 or more first downs and piled up 400 or more yards of offense. The Pioneers finished with 26 first downs and 487 yards of total offense in the win over the Greyhounds.
The Pioneers were 10-of-15 on third down against Assumption with the first team converting nine of 11 through three quarters. Fink three time completed passes for touchdowns on third down in the win. On the flip side, the Pioneers held the Greyhounds to just five-of-14 on third down, including a pair of three-and-outs in the first half that set up SHU scores.
Fink's four passing scores ties the school record set five times in SHU history. The record is also held by Tyler Arciaga ('06), Dan Ammel, Matt McGreevy ('95) and Justin Holtfreter ('01), who accomplished the feat twice.
Tedesco's three scoring grabs ties the school mark set three times before. Current teammate Corey Bundy pulled down three touchdowns in the 2005 season finale at Robert Morris while DeVeren Johnson ('01) set the mark twice during the 2001 season.
The Pioneers improved their series lead over Assumption to 7-3. The series dates back to SHU's inaugural year of competition, 1991, where the Pioneers beat the Greyhounds, 13-0 for the program's first-ever win.
