FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart defensive back Khaamal Whitaker and wide receiver earned weekly honors from the Northeast Conference on Monday for their efforts in last Saturday's 16-7 win at Saint Francis U.
Whitaker was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The fifth-year cornerback led SHU with eight tackles in the Pioneers' first win over the Red Flash since 2011. Whitaker had a fumble recovery to set up a 39-yard Josh Freiria field goal near the end of the first quarter. He also had his fourth interception of the season in the third quarter. Whitaker led a SHU defense that held Saint Francis U to 239 yards of total offense and no third down conversions.
Ennis earned his second straight Rookie of the Week award, and third of the season. The freshman set the tone Saturday, scoring on the first play from scrimmage with a 76-yard end-around for a touchdown. It was his fourth touchdown of the season. Ennis is the only freshman in the NEC to be named Rookie of the Week three times this season.
SHU wraps up the 2017 season Saturday when it hosts Wagner on Senior Day at 12 p.m.
