FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart defensive backs Khaamal Whitaker and Joshua Turner earned weekly honors from the Northeast Conference on Monday for their play in the Pioneers' 21-14 win at Robert Morris on Saturday.
Whitaker was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The fifth-year cornerback had seven tackles and two interceptions in Saturday's win. Whitaker had the game-winning 46-yard interception return for a touchdown with 0:12 left that put the Colonials away. It was his second interception in the half. Whitaker has five career interceptions, three coming in 2017.
Turner became the second Pioneer freshman in as many weeks to be named NEC Rookie of the Week. He had a breakout game Saturday, recording 10 tackles, a sack, a pass breakup, and two blocked punts. Turner is the first SHU player since James Rentz in 2014 to block two kicks in a game.
