The Sacred Heart University football team begins its 2014 campaign on Saturday evening when it hosts Marist College at 6 p.m. on Campus Field. The Pioneers are coming off of a Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship in 2013 that opened with a 37-21 win at Marist.
The Pioneers were selected first in the preseason poll of the NEC head coaches and had seven players named to the Preseason All-NEC Team. Headlining that group are Troy Moore and Keshaudas Spence, both Preseason All-America honorees.
Sacred Heart and Marist are playing for the 12th time, with the Pioneers holding a 6-5 edge in a series that dates back to a September 7, 2002 win (38-27) for Marist. The squads have alternated victories over the last five years, with Sacred Heart earning a 37-21 win to open the 2013 season. Marist last won a game in the series, on Campus Field, on September 3, 2011, 20-7. The longest winning streak in the series is two games, twice by the Pioneers (2003-04 & 2007-08) and once by the Red Foxes (2005-06).
Both Sacred Heart and Marist are defending conference crowns in 2014. The Pioneers captured the Northeast Conference title and played in the FCS Playoffs, while the Red Foxes shared the regular season title in the Pioneer Football League, but did not earn the league's postseason berth.
Every home Sacred Heart football game will be available to watch on-line in some capacity. Saturday's game will be live on NEC Front Row, with Randy Brochu on the call.
