The Sacred Heart University football team, the defending Northeast Conference Champions, played the annual Red-White Spring Game Saturday on Campus Field in Fairfield, Conn.  The defense captured the win 49-45, blocking a last second field goal to secure the victory.

Prior to the game, third-year head coach Mark Nofri announced the captains for the 2014 season. Andrew Brigley (Bergenfield, N.J.), Connor Candito (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Gordon Hill (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Keshaudas Spence (Dorchester, Mass.) were voted as the leaders for the coming season by their teammates.

The offense was paced by three touchdown runs, including an 83-yard scamper late in the third quarter.  Along with the blocked field goal, the defense came up with eight sacks on the day, as well as an interception and a fumble recovery. Points were awarded as normal for all scoring plays, while turnovers (5), first downs (1), defensive stops (1), 15-yard or more runs (2) and 25-yard or more passes (2) also earned points for the squad.

The Pioneers, 10-3 last season, will begin the 2014 campaign with four consecutive home games, beginning August 30 versus Marist on Campus Field.  The defense of the NEC crown gets underway on October 11 when Sacred Heart welcomes Robert Morris University to campus.
