Fairfield, CT (September 14, 2013) – The Sacred Heart Pioneers scored touchdowns on their first four drives Saturday night en route to a run away 45-3 victory over the Lincoln Lions in Sacred Heart's home opener at Campus Field. SHU improves to 3-0 for the first time since 2008.
Junior running back Sean Bell (Medford Lakes, NJ) ran for a career-high 205 yards on 18 carries, averaging an astronomical 11.4 yards per carry. It is the ninth time in program history that a Pioneer ran for over 200 yards in a game and the first time since 2008.
Reigning two-time Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week RJ Noel (Lowell, MA) threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while compiling 97 passing yards and rushing for 39 more. In Sacred Heart's opening drive of the game, Spence ran the ball six straight times as SHU powered their way to a 58-yard touchdown drive that ended with Spence rumbling into the end zone from four yards out. Spence accounted for all of Sacred Heart's yards on the first drive of the game.
Following a Lincoln botched punt; SHU found themselves with great field position at the Lincoln 25 yard line. After a five-yard pass completion to senior wide out Robert Dim (Sicklerville. NJ), Noel scampered into the end zone from 20 yards out to give SHU the early two score lead. The sophomore signal caller executed a beautiful fake hand-off on a read option play that helped him find space for the TD run. Last weekend, Noel ran for a 66-yard touchdown.
On the Pioneers third possession, SHU once again earned great field position at the Lincoln 17-yard line after a Tyler Dube (Southington, CT) 25-yard punt return. Five plays later, Spence powered his way in for his second touchdown of the game from three yards out. Sacred Heart was up 21-0 mid way through the first quarter.
It took the Pioneers just four plays to score on their fourth possession of the game after forcing Lincoln to punt for the third straight time to start the game. Noel completed a 26 yarder to Dim to start the drive, and after a couple small yardage rushes, capped the drive off with a 25-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Bobby Johnson (Uncasville, CT).
Noel had his second touchdown pass of the game in the third quarter, when he connected with sophomore tight end Frank Bakirtzis (West Orange, CT) for a six- yard touchdown to make it 35-3.
Sacred Heart's final touchdown of the game was on the defensive side of the ball when freshman Robert Steffe (Monroe Township, NJ) fell on a fumble in the end zone to score his first career touchdown. Lincoln quarterback Khari Ngozi mishandled a shotgun snap in their endz one that led to the defensive score.
Junior kicker Chris Rogers (Cazenovia, NY) capped Sacred Heart's scoring with a perfect 35-yard field goal to make it 45-3 with 10:32 left in the game.
The Sacred Heart defense flexed it's muscles all night long against Lincoln, allowing just three points while accumulating four sacks and an incredible 17 tackles for loss. Freshman Ryan Cottrell (Montvale, NJ) made plays all night long, notching six tackles, two sacks, and three tackles for loss. Junior defensive lineman Troy Moore (Worcester, MA) added a sack and two tackles for loss.
Sacred Heart is back at home next Saturday when they host the Chowan Hawks on Campus Field at 1:00 pm.
