FAIRFIELD, CT (August 20, 2013) - The Sacred Heart football team is winding down preseason training camp and headed towards week one at Marist on August 31st. The Pioneers have three young quarterbacks vying for the starting role as we chat with each of them and assistant coach Matt Gardner in part six of our season preview.
Part VI - Quarterbacks
Head coach Mark Nofri begins his second season at the helm with a good old fashion quarterback battle in training camp. The Pioneers will enter the 2013 season with a signal caller who has never taken a snap in a game, a similar scenario they faced two seasons ago. Competing for the starting quarterback duties are a trio of sophomores in RJ Noel(Lowell, MA) and Shane Scambray (Laguna Niguel, CA) and transfer Evan Pittman (Baltimore, MD).
Noel and Scambray sat out last season using their red-shirt seasons while Pittman transferred in for the spring semester after spending time at Howard University and Canterbury Prep in New Milford, CT. The trio all saw action in the Red & White Spring game this past April and came into camp this August with the job still up for grabs.
During the spring game, Noel threw the ball well finding senior wide receivers Rickey Moore, Jr. (Griswald, CT) and Robert Dim (Sicklerville, NJ) for touchdowns. Noel found Dim in stride for a 45-yard score. He also ran for a score. Pittman led scoring drives that ended with a touchdown throw and a field goal. Pittman found Moore on an 8-yard scoring strike on a third and goal opportunity.
Coach Nofri and his staff have not yet made a decision on who will go under center at Marist in the opener but have one more scrimmage on Thursday to get a good look at all three signal callers.
On Wednesday we will close out our preview of the SHU defense by talking defensive line with assistant coach and former defensive end Justine Embler.
