FAIRFIELD, CT (August 13, 2013) - The Sacred Heart football preseason is underway and its time to preview the 2013 Pioneers. With August 31st circled on our calenders for kick-off at Marist, lets take a look at the SHU running backs in part one of Pioneer Football Preseason Pass.
PART I - Running Back
The SHU running game is in good hands with the return of junior starter Keshaudas Spence (Dorchester, MA) who leads a stable of capable ball carriers. Spence finished they year with 816 yards rushing and six scores. He averaged 74.2 yards per game and ranked ninth among the NEC's leading rushers. Spence did lead all conference backs averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He had four 100-yard rushing games last fall topped by a career-high 138 yard, three touchdown performance in a road win at Dartmouth.
Spence will be joined by fellow junior Sean Bell (Medford Lakes, NJ) and senior Valentino Perrina (Reading, MA) in the backfield this season. Both Bell and Perrina, along with Spence, heading into camp off impressive performances in the spring game. Bell had 26 carries in 2012 and rushed for 92 yards and a score. Perrina, who will also play fullback at times, had over a 100-yards rushing in the spring game and scored twice in goalline situations.
Junior fullback Pat Casey (Berlin, NJ) had an impressive 2012, finishing second on the team in receptions. Casey was an effective receiver out of the backfield, hauling in 22 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown last fall.
