Williams, Dion and Dee Named as All Northeast Fencing Conference Selections

April 27, 2009

FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart University had three fencers named as all league selections by the Northeast Intercollegiate Fencing Conference. Freshmen Marty Williams (saber) and Justin Dion (epee) were first team selections and junior Kyle Dee was named to the epee second team.

Williams (Plainfield, NJ) finished the league campaign with a 26-4 record. "Marty had a strong freshman season," comments head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "He was especially impressive at the first league meet where he overcame a fever and the flu to go 14-1 on that day and win the crucial deciding bout that gave the Pioneers that first ever victory over perennial power MIT."

"I look for Marty to improve his consistency next season. He has the ability to go undefeated in league play next season and that is what we a re shooting for."

Dion (N. Attleboro, MA) had the best record of all epeeists in the Northeast Conference this past season, posting an impressive 24-4 record. "Justin had a remarkable freshman season," says Vrabel. "We knew that he had potential, but neither Paul (assistant coach Luciano) or I thought that he would have this kind of a year when he came to SHU. After the first month of practice, we saw that Justin could become a very special fencer. He was one of the hardest workers on the team and is the most coachable fencer that I have had at SHU. He really is like a sponge. The scary part is that he has not even come close to reaching his potential yet. He will be a serious threat to repeat this performance next season."

Dee (Colchester, CT) had a solid year with a 16-10 record. He came to Sacred Heart as a foilist and switched to epee midway through his freshman season when injuries to the epee squad forced Dr. Vrabel to switch his weapon.

"I am very happy that Kyle was able to get this recognition this season," says Vrabel. "He is a very smart athlete and probably has the best overall feel for the weapon of any of the epeeists on the team. He is really starting to used advanced tactics in his game and this accomplishment is a result of his development. We look for Kyl to continue to improve through his senior season."

In addition to the success of the men fencers, the Pioneer women had four all league selections with Krista Bacci and Amanda Green being named the the all league first team and Mary Dannegger and Jo Siskidis being named to the second team. Sacred Heart had the most all league selections (seven) of any team in the Conference this season.
