POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Sacred Heart men's fencing team kicked off its dual meet season with a win against Yeshiva, 24-3, and a tough loss to Vassar 17-10. Foil squad captain Dan Convery-Zupan led the way with a perfect 6-0 day.
"We were very pleased with our performance against Yeshiva and were hoping that we could pull off an upset against Vassar, but their saber team was just too strong for us today" commented head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "We were hobbled with our top saber fencer Matt Laudicina injuring his hamstring earlier in the day and our number two fencer Chris Fabio sidelined with a badly sprained ankle. Hopefully we will be healthier and give Vassar a better challenge when we see them again in league competition in February".
The foil squad had another strong performance, going 14-4 on the day.
"Convery-Zupan has established himself as force in foil in the region this year and has a great chance to repeat his first team all league performance of last season" said Dr. Vrabel. "The rest of the foil team is young and very talented and I believe that over the next few meets others on the squad will be able to step up to Dan's level of performance."
The epee squad also fenced well, going 12-6 on the day. They were led by senior squad captain Charles Thompson (5-1) and freshman standout Sean McGeveran (4-1).
"I was very pleased to see Chaz and Sean have great performances." said Vrabel. "Sean has been working very hard on adapting his game to college fencingl and his hard work is now really starting to pay off. Charlie looks ready to improve on his second team all-league performance from last year"
The team is back in action on December 1 when it travels to Philadelphia to take on the powerful Penn Quakers.
