NEW HAVEN, CT - The Pioneer men's traveled to Yale Saturday afternoon to face the Bulldogs. Despite a strong effort, Sacred Heart lost to a much-improved Yale squad 16-11. The epee squad went 6-3 on the day, led by perfect records from sophomores Justin Dion and Nick Negron.
"The addition of Colin Mills and Nate Benzimra greatly improved Yale's saber squad this year," said head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "We lost three crucial 5-4 bouts (two in epee and one in saber) that made the difference in the match. Overall, I was pleased with our effort. Yale's foil squad is excellent and they were just quick enough to control most of the bouts."
"Marty Williams had a very nice day," he continued. "His quickness and intensity was superb and I look for him to finish the season with similar performances. Justin also dominated in epee (winning by margins of 5-3, 5-2 and 5-2). Nick was solid and Jeremiah lost two very tough bouts by 5-4 scores. While it would have been great to come away with a win, I liked our focus and intensity. If we bring a similar game to the last conference meet this Saturday, we will have a good shot at winning the conference championship. Right now, consistency is the key for us."
The Pioneers are next in action against Columbia and NYU at Columbia on Feb 3rd.
